Rank Choice Voting
In 2020, the voters of Alaska passed Ballot Measure 2. This established the open primary and rank choice voting system. In the open primary voters pick one candidate, and the top four candidates in a race proceed to the general election. In the general election voters rank the candidates in order of preference, but it is important to note that voters are not required to rank multiple candidates. This video produced by the Alaska Division of Elections can help explain rank choice voting and what it means for Alaska’s elections. More information about rank choice voting can be found on the Division of Elections website.
